The Whirligig has been a presence in a few forms in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, for more than 26 years. Originally owned by Betty & Bill Camp at 135 Water Street, it changed hands to David Hill & Bernie Brown over a decade ago. The shop was moved across the street to 138 where it lived happily alongside a cafe and art studio. In June 2021, they made the decision to retire, leaving the store without an owner. The store remained closed between July 2021 and July 2022 when it was relocated to 142 Water Street under new ownership. The shop was reopened on July 29, 2022 and is the only independent used bookstore between LaHave and Yarmouth.

Though this is not what I expected when I moved back to Nova Scotia, it is a dream come true. I’m so happy to be able to keep the store alive and provide books, music, and movies to nearby residents and tourists. I’ve got great hours, competitive prices, and a wonderful selection that is updated all the time. If you haven’t visited yet, drop by and check it out. I can’t wait to meet you!
